New Bags – ‘Sakebukuro’ bicycle tool bag and shoulder bag
I recently acquired a very limited number of vintage ‘Sakebukuro’ bags. These are bags used in the Sake making process in Japan, for filtering the rice water. They are dyed using persimmon juice, which acts like a preservative and germ killing agent for the bags. It also strengthens them and prevents them from being attacked by insects when they are stored. The resulting colours of the canvas material are beautiful and varied depending on the wear and how many times the dye has been re-applied. Some of the bags have lovely repairs which add a lot of character. A very limited number of these bags are available, and each varies in size depending on the characteristics of the piece of material. Please Note: As the fabric is many years old, the bags are suitable for light use only.
The first item is a bicycle tool bag which can be strapped to your front or rear rack, or it can be used for a multitude of other purposes. Ideal for carrying your spare inner tube, puncture repair outfit and multi-tool. If you use it for carrying tools, I suggest you wrap them in a rag to keep the shape of the bag. Sizes vary a little depending on the original bag, around 255 x 320 mm. The second is a small shoulder bag, of the same size. Both are unlined, and feature straps and closures in beautiful oak bark tanned leather, with hand burnished edges.

Roll Top Canvas and Leather Back Pack
A versatile roll top canvas and leather back pack. Big enough for a 15 inch laptop and lots of other stuff. Tough 16oz canvas outer with double thickness at the base and where straps are attached on the back. Lined with natural 12oz canvas. Straps are made from Baker’s Oak Bark tanned bridle leather with extra thick and wide 5mm stirrup leather sections for comfort on the shoulder. Leather Document Wallets
Solid leather document wallets made to order and to size required. The light tan version below is made for A4 documents with space to spare. Constructed from beautiful oak bark tanned Baker’s leather, with hand stitched Sun logo detail and solid copper rivet corner reinforcements. The other is a larger capacity version in a softer Tobacco coloured leather with riveted inside canvas pocket. All leather hand creased and edge burnished.

Canvas and Leather Bags – Concept
There are a lot of bags out there on the market but I was frustrated in trying to find a bag that is simple looking, timeless and hard wearing. I wanted it to be made from top quality materials that would age gracefully and acquire patina with use. Since I couldn’t find what I wanted I set out to produce my own.
Canvas is heavy duty 16 ounce cotton, and linings 12 ounce loom-state canvas. Leather straps and closings are made from what I consider to be the finest English leather, oak bark tanned at Baker’s of Colyton, where the tannery has been operating for 400 years. This leather is very fine, hard wearing and supple… Quality comes at a price and it IS expensive! Edges of most straps are hand burnished using gum tragacanth, a natural substance derived from the sap of a plant, rather than being painted with a chemical edge finish. Fittings are solid brass or nickel plated solid brass, and rivets are solid copper, hand hammered and set. Each bag is different with variations in small details so that every one is exclusive. I am also collaborating with master knot tyer Des Pawson in producing a limited number of straps in natural hemp rope with fancy knots. Those of you familiar with my vintage bicycle blog will know that I am heavily into cycling, so there will be some cycling related bags to come including a luxury leather musette.
